Amidst Nigeria’s ongoing battle against Boko Haram and banditry in the North-East and North-West regions, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has directed the Nigerian Army School of Military Engineering (NASME) to intensify rigorous, mission-focused training to produce highly skilled combat engineers.
During his maiden operational visit to NASME’s Makurdi headquarters on March 4, 2026, Lt. Gen. Shaibu emphasized the critical role of military engineers in modern warfare, citing technical expertise, mobility support, and infrastructure development as key to success in Nigeria’s conflict theatres.
“Training at NASME must be realistic, practical, and aligned with contemporary battlefield realities,” he stressed, adding that this would boost the Nigerian Army’s combat effectiveness.
The COAS also reaffirmed his commitment to improving personnel welfare, citing its impact on morale and operational efficiency. “The welfare of our troops is paramount, and we must ensure they have the best possible living conditions to perform optimally,” he said.
NASME Commandant, Major General Idongesit Essien Ekpenyong, highlighted progress and challenges, including infrastructure and welfare issues. “We appreciate the Army Chief’s support and are committed to delivering high-quality training to support our troops,” he said.
The visit underscores the Army’s focus on capacity building and technical training to enhance operational readiness.
