The Nigerian Army has clarified reports surrounding the recent terrorist attacks in Borno State, stating that troops successfully repelled coordinated assaults by Boko Haram insurgents in several communities while making significant sacrifices in the line of duty.
In a statement released by the Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, the military addressed a report published by Sahara Reporters which alleged that more than 40 soldiers were killed during the attacks. According to the Army, the report relied largely on unverified sources and failed to capture the gallantry and swift response of troops who defended vulnerable communities from multiple terrorist assaults.
Boko Haram fighters launched coordinated night attacks on communities and military locations in Konduga, Ngoshe, Mainok, and Jakana. Troops deployed in the areas responded quickly, engaging the insurgents in intense firefights and successfully repelling the attacks from multiple directions. Several terrorists were neutralized during the engagements as soldiers fought to protect civilians and prevent the destruction of communities.
Despite the successful defence operations, the Nigerian Army confirmed that the confrontation resulted in the loss of a Commanding Officer and some brave soldiers who were killed while confronting the terrorists. Military authorities described their deaths as heroic sacrifices that helped prevent greater devastation across the affected communities.
“Their deaths are a heroic sacrifice that prevented terrorists from unleashing wider destruction on innocent civilians,” the military said in a statement signed by Lt. Col. Sani Uba, Media Information Officer.
The Army Chief, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, visited troops at the operational headquarters in Maiduguri to assess the situation and boost morale. During the visit, the Army Chief directed the immediate reinforcement of troops and deployment of additional combat equipment to strengthen ongoing counter-terrorism operations.
The Nigerian Army confirmed that coordinated ground and air operations under Operation HADIN KAI are ongoing to pursue the insurgents and dismantle their regrouping cells. Troops are also working to rescue civilians who may have been abducted during the attacks and restore normalcy to affected communities.
The military urged members of the public to disregard exaggerated or misleading reports that could undermine the morale of soldiers risking their lives on the frontlines. The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to defeating Boko Haram insurgency and securing communities across Borno and the wider North-East region.
