South African Army Chief Applauds Nigerian Army’s Rapid Rise in Cyber Warfare Capability

The Chief of the South African Army, Lieutenant General Lawrence Mbatha, has commended the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command for its professionalism and rapid advancement in modern cyber operations. Lieutenant General Mbatha gave the commendation on Monday, March 9, 2026, during an official visit to Abuja, where he observed the Command’s growing capabilities in the cyber domain and its role in strengthening the Nigerian Army’s ability to confront emerging digital threats.

He praised the Command for the remarkable progress it has made since its establishment in 2020, noting that cyber capabilities have become an indispensable component of contemporary military operations in today’s evolving global security environment. The South African Army Chief also highlighted the longstanding historical and military ties between Nigeria and South Africa, recalling that several South African military officers had previously undergone training in Nigeria.

Welcoming the visiting delegation, the Commander of the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command, Major General Kennedy Osemwegie, described the visit as a historic and memorable moment for the Command. According to him, the visit underscores the strong relationship between Nigeria and South Africa and reflects the importance both countries attach to military cooperation and strategic partnership.

Major General Osemwegie expressed optimism that the engagement would further deepen collaboration in areas such as cyber warfare, capacity development, and strategic military cooperation between the two armies. The visit reflects Nigeria’s expanding role in cyber defense across Africa, as countries increasingly prioritise digital capabilities to counter modern security threats.

Security experts say Nigeria’s strengthening cyber warfare capacity could significantly boost regional security, helping African nations confront digital threats that transcend national borders .
