Nigerian Army Chief Pushes Strategic Career Planning to Strengthen Military Operations

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has emphasized the need for strategic career planning and effective personnel management among officers as a critical factor in strengthening military operations within the Nigerian Army.

The Army Chief made the call during the opening ceremony of the 7th Army Headquarters Department of the Military Secretary Career Planning and Management Seminar 2026, held at the Armed Forces Officers’ Mess on Tuesday.

Represented by the Chief of Personnel Management (Army), Major General Adewale Adekeye, the COAS noted that efficient career planning is vital for harnessing the leadership potential and professional capacity of officers, which ultimately contributes to operational success.

According to him, the evolving nature of modern warfare requires the Nigerian Army to remain proactive, innovative and resilient in addressing emerging security challenges.

He stressed that deploying officers based on their competencies and professional expertise would enhance productivity and significantly improve operational effectiveness.

Speaking on the theme, “Efficient Career Planning and Management of Officers: Key to Advancing the Transformation of the Nigerian Army within a Joint and Multi-Agency Environment,” the Army Chief highlighted the importance of modern human resource management strategies in strengthening the service’s ability to operate effectively alongside other security agencies.

In his welcome remarks, the Military Secretary (Army), Major General Everest Okoro, said the seminar was designed to sustain high standards in the planning and management of officers’ careers, a core responsibility of the Department of the Military Secretary.

He explained that the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to improve the Nigerian Army’s officer career management system in order to enhance professionalism, morale and operational effectiveness across the force.

The seminar featured lectures and discussions led by experienced military and academic resource persons, focusing on contemporary approaches to military human resource management, career development and personnel welfare as key components for strengthening professionalism and operational efficiency within the Nigerian Army.
