The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Army to strengthening military cooperation with the Egyptian Armed Forces, particularly in the area of advanced professional training aimed at addressing evolving security challenges.
The COAS stated this on Thursday while receiving the Egyptian Defence Attaché to Nigeria, Colonel Mohammed Ibrahim, during a courtesy visit to the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
Lieutenant General Shaibu noted that Nigeria and Egypt share a longstanding and mutually beneficial military relationship, describing the collaboration between the two armies as a vital platform for enhancing operational capability and professional development.
He emphasized that sustained cooperation through advanced military courses, training exchanges, and professional military education remains essential for preparing personnel to effectively confront contemporary security threats.
According to the Army Chief, several Nigerian Army officers have benefited from specialized and advanced military training programmes in Egypt, which have significantly strengthened the professional competence of the force.
Shaibu expressed the Nigerian Army’s readiness to further expand these training opportunities in order to equip personnel with the knowledge and skills required to respond effectively to complex and emerging security threats.
He also highlighted the need to strengthen institutional collaboration between both armies, particularly through strategic-level training and participation in programmes at the Nigerian Army War College.
According to him, such engagements will further deepen professional ties, promote knowledge exchange, and enhance joint capacity to address evolving security challenges.
The COAS equally extended an invitation to the Egyptian Army to participate in the forthcoming Nigerian Army Day Celebration scheduled for July 2026.
Lieutenant General Shaibu further stressed the importance of exploring additional areas of cooperation, particularly in the development of aviation capabilities and operational support systems, noting that such collaboration would enhance operational readiness, technological innovation, and overall mission effectiveness.
Earlier in his remarks, the Egyptian Defence Attaché, Colonel Mohammed Ibrahim, said his visit was aimed at reviewing the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between both militaries in 2024.
He disclosed that significant progress had been made in executing several aspects of the agreement, particularly in the area of training cooperation.
Colonel Ibrahim added that preparations were ongoing for the next Military Committee Meeting scheduled to hold in Cairo later this year.
He reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to strengthening military collaboration with Nigeria, especially in the areas of advanced military training and intelligence sharing to address the evolving security challenges confronting both nations.
