Maiduguri, Borno State — Dozens of people were injured Monday evening after multiple suicide bomb explosions struck key locations in Maiduguri during Iftar, the Muslim breaking of fast. The attacks caused panic and chaos in crowded public areas.
According to Operation HADIN KAI, suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers detonated explosives at about 7:05 p.m. on March 16, 2026.
Three Crowded Areas Targeted
The explosions occurred at three locations across Maiduguri Metropolitan Council:
Post Office area
Monday Market axis
Entrance to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH)
The attackers deliberately chose busy areas to inflict maximum casualties.
Security Forces Respond Immediately
Troops of Operation HADIN KAI, alongside the Nigeria Police Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, secured the blast sites within minutes.
Emergency teams from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) evacuated the injured to:
General Hospital Maiduguri
Specialist Hospital
University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital
Medical personnel are currently treating victims, while rescue operations continue.
Authorities Warn of Possible Coordinated Attacks
Preliminary reports indicate multiple suicide bombers may have entered the city. Security agencies have intensified patrols, surveillance, and counter-IED measures to prevent further attacks and apprehend the suspects.

Authorities advise residents to remain calm but vigilant, avoid crowded areas, and immediately report any suspicious individuals or objects.
