The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has emphasized that the expansion of the Nigerian Army Aviation wing is a critical component of the modernization drive, poised to significantly enhance the Army’s capabilities in addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
Speaking during a strategic visit by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Mr. Richard Pheelangwa, to Army Headquarters, Abuja, General Shaibu stressed that sustained policy support and predictable resource allocation are essential to maximizing the operational impact of air power.
The COAS highlighted the ongoing expansion of Army Aviation capabilities and enhancement of Unmanned Aerial Systems as vital enablers that improve response times, precision engagement, and situational awareness across multiple theatres of operation. These capabilities are redefining battlefield dynamics and strengthening the Army’s ability to project power, dominate operational space, and protect civilians.
General Shaibu noted that sustainable funding structures, efficient procurement processes, and robust logistical support are crucial to the success of these modernization efforts. He advocated for predictable resource flows to ensure continuity, operational effectiveness, and long-term dominance.
The COAS also emphasized the need for investment in barracks construction and facility upgrades to guarantee adequate accommodation, enhanced welfare, and improved living standards for personnel, describing these as essential to morale, cohesion, and operational effectiveness.
Mr. Pheelangwa reaffirmed the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to strengthening administrative synergy, eliminating procedural bottlenecks, and prioritizing resource governance and policy implementation to support the Army’s aviation expansion and modernization agenda.
This development underscores the Nigerian Army’s commitment to leveraging technology and modernization to stay ahead of evolving security threats and protect the nation’s interests.
