Collagen Boosts Skin Elasticity but Doesn’t Prevent Wrinkles, Scientists Say

Collagen is a protein the body naturally produces to support the structure of skin, nails, bones, tendons and cartilage. However, levels gradually decline with age. A new scientific review suggests that taking collagen supplements each day can improve skin elasticity and hydration over time — but they are not a miracle cure for wrinkles.

Researchers analysed 113 clinical trials involving nearly 8,000 participants and concluded they are highly confident that collagen powders or pills offer “legitimate” benefits when used consistently. While the improvements are measurable, experts emphasise that results are gradual and not dramatic.

Not a miracle solution — but benefits are real

The findings, published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum, indicate that collagen supplementation may also reduce joint pain, stiffness and symptoms of osteoarthritis.

Collagen production begins to slow in early adulthood, and existing collagen breaks down more quickly with age. Lifestyle factors such as smoking and sun exposure accelerate this process. Around menopause, women can lose roughly a third of their skin’s collagen, further contributing to visible ageing.

There are several supplement types available, including marine, bovine and vegan formulations. However, the review found no clear evidence that one type is superior to another.

Professor Lee Smith, one of the study’s lead investigators from Anglia Ruskin University, said the research brings together the strongest evidence so far on collagen supplementation.

“Collagen is not a cure-all,” he explained, “but it does have credible benefits when used consistently over time, particularly for skin health and osteoarthritis. Our findings show clear improvements in important aspects of healthy ageing, while dispelling some of the myths.”

The researchers also highlighted that many earlier studies were funded by the supplement industry and often made bold anti-ageing claims. Their own review did not receive industry funding.

Skin maintenance rather than wrinkle eraser

According to the authors, collagen may be better viewed as part of long-term skin maintenance — especially for ageing or sun-damaged skin — rather than as a dedicated anti-wrinkle treatment.

Improvements in skin tone and moisture can contribute to a more youthful appearance, but supplements do not stop the natural ageing process.

Diet still matters

Nutrition experts stress that a balanced diet plays a crucial role in supporting the body’s own collagen production.

Bridget Benelam from the British Nutrition Foundation noted that vitamin C is essential for collagen formation. Foods such as citrus fruits, berries, green vegetables, peppers and tomatoes can help ensure adequate intake. Zinc — found in meat, poultry, cheese, shellfish, nuts, seeds and wholegrains — also supports collagen production.

Most dietary collagen and many supplements are derived from animal sources, making them unsuitable for vegans. However, the body can synthesise collagen from amino acids found in plant-based protein sources such as beans and lentils, and vegan supplement options are available.

Dr Tamara Griffiths, president of the British Association of Dermatologists, welcomed the findings but called for further robust dermatological studies to confirm and expand upon the results.

Overall, the review suggests collagen supplements can offer measurable — though modest — improvements in skin quality and joint health when taken consistently, but they should not be seen as a quick fix for ageing.
